The four basic types of storage
Are you dreaming about a clutter free life? When was the last time you felt your house was completely without things laying around, papers on the table... You probably do have lot of storage space, but you're not using it properly. Let's have a look at the four storage types and you can start decluttering your house. Feel free to combine all these types of storage units, so you can come up with a solution that fits your own needs.
Remote Storage or Out-of-Sight Storage
Things that you don't use everyday, weekly or monthly should be stored in a remote storage. Garages, spare rooms, attics, dry basements are all remote storage rooms. Use them to keep your sports equipment, garden chairs for the summer, seasonal clothing, decorations for the holidays, file cabinets, out grown toys, collections, hobby items... Be sure to use weather-tight containers to protect your belongings.
Closed Storage pr Out of Sight but Close at Hand Storage
The ideal place to store cooking equipment, craft projects, office supplies, clothes, anything that can cause a cluttered look. Place all of these items in closets, chests, drawers or in file cabinets. Smaller parts are best being placed in drawers so you can easily find them when you need them. Place dividers or storage containers in your drawers and they will look and feel organized too. Pillows, blankets can be harbored in an under-bed storage box.
Convenient Storage or In-Room Storage
Storage spaces that are in the room where you want to use the items that are organized there, are convenient storages. Why would you want to keep your pots and pans in a closet in your bedroom, or your clothes in a cupboard in your kitchen? Store your items in the room you will need them.
Put items you need the most in the top drawers, things you use less in the lower drawers. If after a while you discover that you seldom use this or that item, then move it to an upper shelve or to the least convenient place, like the back of a closet. If you think the closets are too small, look at special furniture like an armoire or a toy box. Adjust your storage space to your own special needs;
Open storage
To display your photos, collections or your books use an open storage unit like a bookcase, hooks, glass-front cabinets... Make sure you don't place any unattractive items in an open storage, use the closets and cupboard to store them. Use a well-designed coat tree to hang up your coats, hang things on hooks. You can even use baskets or boxes and place them on your open shelves. These are ideal for papers that are cluttering your table or holding your CDs.
Never use open storage for things that can't look organized, because if you do you will feel it is visually distracting.
I'm sure if you take a look around your house you'll find all four types. The hardest part is to use them for the right purpose. But with the tips printed above, you'll get the hang of it in no time and your house will soon be clutter free.
