How to build storage units
Do you have lot of stuff, but is it hard to find someplace to store it all? Why don't you give a try and build storage units yourself? It can be done quick and easy and it will not cost you a lot of money.
Non-adjustable storage units
Think about were you would like to add some storage units: in the kitchen, the basement or any other room. It is all possible and will be very handy to organize your items. If you build your storage units yourself, you can choose any size or width you want to make them in. Use solid boards and you will have extra storage room for all your normal needs.
If you make non-adjustable storage units, it is important to think about what you are going to store on them, because otherwise you'll probably loose some storage room because some object are just taller than others. Minimize your wasted space by giving this some thought.
When design and adjustability are not that important, non-adjustable storage units make the perfect choice. You can easily nail them together with support pieces. That way a structural strength will be provided.
Small cleats will give enough support to certain types of non-adjustable storage units if they are placed every 3', or to hold heavy loads, every 2.5'. If you are nailing the cleats make sure everything is spaced out at all points and in the proper position, by using a level or a T-square.
If you drive your nails at a downward angle the cleat will be able to carry a heavier load, when using an upward angle they will probably will be pulled out when placing a heavy load on the cleats.
If you are making a storage unit that will carry really heavy loads, you should use wide cleats because they will give a lot of structural strength. Be sure to nail them firmly.
Adjustable storage units
To make adjustable storage units you will have to use dado cuts in the side supports. They can be placed anywhere you want them. When using dado cuts for adjustable storage units, you will have to make them relatively deep. If you mind seeing the dado cut when you look at your storage unit, than you can choose to make a concealed dado cut. If you choose to use the concealed dado cut, make sure you make them deep enough.
If you are planning to use long lengths of storage room, it is advised to use a pinned joint for structural strength. You can insert or remove this piece when it is necessary.
If you don't want to use dado cuts, you can make cuts with angles of 90-degrees and 45-degrees, cut your shelves to the same 45-degree angle, and they will fit perfectly. This type of adjustable storage units, will not be able to carry a heavy load.
Adjustable storage units can also be made by using a 1x4 board to use for the base. This board can have the length you prefer. Holes will have to be drilled at the wanted intervals. If you have drilled all the holes in to the board, you will have to split the board down the middle and mount it somewhere so it can proved support. Each board will make two supports for your storage unit. To fit your shelves, you will need to to round and sand the ends to be able to fit into the supports.
You can also opt to use wooden or metal brackets. Metal brackets are usually less expensive and easier to use than wooden ones. When using brackets, all you have to do is drill holes at the intervals you want into the supporting walls. You can put your shelf on two supporting brackets. Brackets should only be used when light loads are being stored.
There are lots of choices in brackets: flush-type brackets, dowel pins a regular shelf bracket... Choose the one that fits your own needs.
With the easy steps stated in this article, you will be able to build your own storage units and declutter your house.
